Parents have been left fuming at the conditions at the school – and many believe that problems have been left to fester for weeks or even months. Stephen Stewart, whose ten-year-old daughter attends the school, told the Evening Times that the buildings are in a “diabolical state”. He continued: “Kids sit there in freezing cold, damp, wet conditions. I’m concerned about the way the children are being treated and about their health.”

Another parent, Michelle Ronald, told the newspaper that her children were “absolutely frozen” when she picked them up from their classes. “Sending the children home on a weekday was really inconvenient and keeping the school closed is disruptive. The problem should have been sorted straight away.”

A spokesman for Glasgow City Council admitted that asbestos had been found in the school and that contractors were also dealing with a number of burst pipes on the premises. “Asbestos was found around one pipe and our contractors are speaking to the Health & Safety Executive before completing this repair,” he said.

Although the problems have obviously caused serious inconvenience for parents, it may have also served to remind them of how much they rely on their water supply and good quality plumbing in their own homes. When pipes burst in a school it’s a council’s responsibility to sort it out, but in a private property, it can often fall to the homeowner to cover the cost of the repairs.
